"We are willing to release players for camps and international competitions. After this, I don't think HI will object to players becoming part of World Series Hockey. Then it amounts to restraint on trade, which won't stand the test from a legal standpoint": Harish Thawani, Executive Chairman, Nimbus

For Narinder Batra, Hockey India general secretary, hockey leagues can spring up everywhere. But most importantly they need to have the sanction of Hockey India. Amitesh Srivastav spoke to Narinder Batra about the Indian Hockey Federation proposed league in association with Nimbus.

Narinder Batra
“I don’t want to comment on the Indian Hockey Federation. They are a domestic body and exist because of a court order in May 2010. They have no sanction from the FIH, the world body. It’s not possible that they can call foreign players and ask them to participate in the league.”

“Honestly, I am not in favour of taking action against players. Hockey is financially weak and we don’t know under what compulsion the players have signed the papers. But if their contracts say that they cannot play elsewhere, then bad luck to them as they cannot play for India again.”

“I haven’t seen any of the contracts. But it’s simple. All the players under Hockey India cannot play in any league not recognised by us.”

“I am saying this in a lighter vein – Gill knows that his Indian Hockey Federation as a body is over. Maybe, he thinks that since they didn’t qualify for the Beijing Olympics 2008, he would again stop us from qualifying for the London 2012 Olympics. But we won’t let that happen.”

If the players are retired or former players, we don’t have any issue with any league. But I will take a legal opinion. If there are players from the present bunch who are playing for India, then I have an issue.”

We would be selecting the new coach by mid January. Harendra and the other coaches have resigned and we have accepted their resignations. We will look for a new team of coaches.”

Of course, we have full trust in Pargat Singh. We have had a talk and he knows what we want.”
