Needing a win to stay in contention for a place in the Azlan Shah final, India beat Pakistan 2-1 here at Ipoh in the Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament on Thursday.

India sped into the lead with two penalty corner conversions by Sandeep Singh (7') and Diwakar Ram (26'). In the first half, India led 2-0.

Pakistan captain Shakeel Abbasi who was marked very well in the first half broke away a few times in the second half to trouble the Indian defence. Midway, through the second half, they stringed together a few good passes but goalkeeper Adrian D'Souza saw to it that India didn't lose the 2-0 lead.

But off yet another attack, a ball hit a defender's leg in front of the Indian goal as former Pakistan captain Muhammad Saqlain converted the stroke to cut the scores to 1-2.

The equaliser could have gone Pakistan's way but for some dour defending and great goalkeeping from Adrian.

India now need to beat hosts Malaysia to confirm a place in the final.
Coach A.K Bansal was a happy man and said, "I think the plan was followed though I must admit that we went a bit defensive in the second half. Now we will strive to beat the hosts and make it to the finals."

India scorers Sandeep Singh and Diwakar Ram.

Muhammad Saqlain scored from the penalty spot for Pakistan in the second half.

Now, India need to win against Malaysia on Saturday to play in the final. Pakistan will surely be cheering for Malaysia!

Teams India Pakistan
Goals Scored 2 1
Shots Targeted 5 6
Penalty Corners 4 4
PC Converted 2 0

It was an excellent display of skills in today’s match. Hope India continues its performance and beat Malaysia on Saturday to confirm its place in final against Argentina, so we can defeat Argentina in final and take revenge of 5-1 defeat in the league match.

Re: India beat Pakistan 2-1

1. Good show by a young team. It is an irony that Sandeep Singh was not selected for the Olympic qualifiers because of the wied selection methods of IHF. He had and has loads of talent. The team can do more better if 2-3 experienced players are added in the forwardline. Please don't select "Gagan Ajit Singh" since the guy has attitiude problem and does not really play like a team player.

2. Never ever select a foreigner to coach our hockey team. Instead treat the players with due respect since they have lot of talent but nobody ever treated them with respect.

3. Do give our hockey players some good money since they are playing for their motherland. Try to give some x% of what cricketers earn, and see what these young guns can do on the field.

4. Our hockey team needs respect and confidence from we all Indians.

Cheers for the win over Pakis!

All the best for future,

Rising from ashes .... India taking one win at a time. The journey is long and hard but little victories add to the morale and confidence of the team.

tremendous effort after loosing initial matches. And i think India has beaten 2-3 teams ranked above us in this tournament. It goes to show that things can improve in future with right administration in place. Comments are welcome.

Re: India beat Pakistan 2-1

what a sweet surprise, after the chillle disaster now the team should try to wi against malasia to enter into the final well done all credit should go to sandeep singh and coach bansal sandeep singh should have been selected for olimpic qualifier team which had played in chille in the final india had recieved 10 penalty corners , had sandeep was there the india would have been playing in bejing olympic.

Whenever India wins in Hockey ,like me lakhs of Indians really get immense happiness.
Our young and skilful Indian Team really is on the come back. Let us give importance
to our national game. Dear Indians don't forget India is regarded in the sports world
only for its hockey skills.

A very happy surprise. Hope we beat Malaysia and then Argentina in the finals.
We have loads of talent but no proper management. A win in the final will give hockey in India an immense psychological boost. In the meantime, go for it guys.

Re: India beat Pakistan 2-1

This is a morale boosting win for the Indian team. The win is more sweet because it comes due to 2 big factors. One, the senior players like Sandeep, Adrian and Sardara playing their role to perfection and secondly the Juniors running hard to fall back for defense. Of course, we could have been more attacking in the second half, but we had Adrian to thank today. Going forward, I think we can now focus on the Gold medal and stop experimenting. The team has to be stable for the next 2 games. Let us hope, we can get an respectable finish with this young and hardworking team.

Re: India beat Pakistan 2-1

The young bunch of Indians did really well. Hats off to Sandeep, Diwakar and Adrian. The pitch is not as rosy as the ones in India. Its quite bouncy and especially in the 4'0 clock match the water dries off very fast. Luckily India got a PC in 6th min and Sundeep was lucky to get th ball rolling. The second PC looked like that there was lot of ball movement due to lack off water and ball kept bouncing which must have decreased the approach speed in sandeep. Otherwise he would have scored that goal too. Happy to see that from 2 defeats the boys have woke and went on to win the 3 matches. I am sure that on saturday Indians can change the tide and win against host Malaysians to reach the final. The final would be a different ball game then. Best of luck Sardara and coach Bansal. You all could bring the Azlan shah cup home if little more hard work is done on the field for next 2 matchs.

Andrew:

India will beat Malaysia comfortably and reach the finals. Just because India lost to England in the qualifiers of Olympics doesn't mean England has improved... I think 9/10 times India will beat England if they play each other.

By Laks on   Friday, May 16, 2008

Re: India beat Pakistan 2-1

India won all the three matches with the help of drag-flickers. Out of the 15 goals scored by India so far 11 are scored through penalty corner conversions. India is very poor in defence and forward line due to the absence of Dilip Tirkey, Tushar, Prabhjot, Rajpal, etc. Hope India will beat Malaysia and enter the finals.

Re: India beat Pakistan 2-1

A young team has started well, raising hopes for the future. It also shows that the previous selections were flawed, and the coaches under Gill regime were a part of improper selection. Sandeep Singh is a big, example amongst the present lot of having being denied his place in the team for reasons other than related to hockey. Dhanraj Pillay, perhaps one of the greats in Indian Hockey, was not wrong. He was punished for airing his views. The journey ahead is tough and would take time, but a good start has been made. Wishing Indian Hockey all the best.

Re: India beat Pakistan 2-1

IF:
* we have 200 synthetic surfaces in the smaller towns and cities and make sure our kids play on them
* play at least 4 international tournaments a year
* bolster our domestic league
* pump in money for the players and assure them of fat pensions
* do aggressive marketing
* promote hockey a fraction of what we do with cricket
* update equipment, facilities and coaches
* have accountable administrators

...there is no way any country in the world will ever beat us in hockey. there is a vast talent pool like in IT just waiting to be tapped!!

Re: India beat Pakistan 2-1

congratulations. everybody will love you if you will win matches. its totally rubbish to say that people in India watch only cricket. in fact they watch eveRy sport where our team or player do well. see for example Sania, Anju B Jeorge (though we understand nothing about her sport), Major R. Rathore (he is big star now AND ONLY DUE TO WINNING).
if you will win, sponsors will also search you automaticly.
all the best for match against Malaysia. please don't take this match llightly like our team took Poland thereby failed to qualify to semifinal duriing Atlanta Olympics in 1996.

Re: India beat Pakistan 2-1

Hi Guys there at Epoh !! well done..infact I shouldn't say that yet, but anyways I would say that because our ears were longing from long back to hear the goalboards sounding for India on the field. Atlast the new blood is reahing the dead cells and the transfusion done by IOA with removing dead organs from the IHF body is working now. The body has responded well. I hope this game recovers well and then grows back into its original shape and glory like it use to be in mid ninties. My congrats to Sandeep, Divakar ram, Aldrin, Sardara, Coach bansal and yes the new command at Ad-hoc committiee. Looking forward to see tri clour flying high at Epoh on finals. Best of luck guys......

Re: India beat Pakistan 2-1

We must remain patient, its a long road ahead before we are anywhere near a world beating team but with the new approach of getting rid IHF and the old wood that went with it can only be a shot in the arm for our boys and the new management to prove the critics wrong. Treat players with fairness and Indian hockey can once more be a force as Football is with Brazil.
Best wishes to the new management and please take Ric Charlesworth seriously, the man got credentails.

Congertulation on victory over Pakistan, keep it up further success will come.
