Argentina beat India in Azlan final

Ipoh: India failed in their quest for a fourth Sultan Azlan Shah Hockey crown going down fighting 1-2 to Argentina. For Argentina, it was their first Azlan Shah trophy win.

India took the lead in the 11th minute when Sandeep Singh converted a penalty corner.

Argentina equalised in the 15th minute off a field goal from Mario Almada. At that point with both the teams tied at 1-1, India did have the better chances but couldn't convert it into increasing the lead.
Argentina played defensively soaking in the pressure and at the break both the teams were tied at 1-1.

After the break, both the teams were cautious and not coming out in numbers. That was where India faltered. They should have come out of their shell and taken the initiative. They didn't have anything to lose except win the trophy.

The match went into extra-time and in the 73rd minute, Almada scored his second goal to clinch the title for Argentina.
Sandeep Singh with nine goals was the top scorer of the tournament.

For the 3rd/4th match, New Zealand beat Pakistan 2-1. Canada beat Belgium on a golden goal 4-3 to finish 5th while hosts Malaysia finished 7th.

Re: India lose the final

India played well in the final to really make a come back from the initial 2 defeats. Hats off to Sundeep Singh to emerge as top goal scorer and to really drag India into the final with sharp swing flicks. I am sure if he was in the Olympic qualifiers we would have surely qualified for the Olympics. Thanks to Adrian for his brilliant saves and his extensive skills in goalkeeping. I am sure that Bansal and his co. would have a easy cake walk in the junior tournament with quality of players that he has and I hope that he continues takes advises of Ric Charlesworth.

Re: India lose the Azlan final

If people like KPS Gill exist in indian hockey then players cannot play their best hockey because of off the field non sense of ruling body lead by him till date. We wish THE NEW LOOK INDIAN TEAM A VERY BEST IN ALL THE FUTURE TOURNAMENTS SO THAT WE "WILL ONCE AGAIN REGAIN OUR OLYMPIC GLORY".

LONG LIVE INDIAN HOCKEY.

BEST WISHES

Re: India lose the Azlan final

Welldone. That was good performance by the young Indian team. Keep it up.
I have not seen any comments by Ric, yes he commented on where the Team stood on the world stage, when India played Argentina in the first game and he is absolutely right.
I still believe he should be the Chief Coach and Director with Bansal ,Pargat and other members reporting/liasing with him. An Opportunity not to be wasted. He needs a free hand and give him the respect he deserves, folks!, there is so much to gain and work to be done. It appears things are moving in the right direction...but we must not get carried away...we have to look laterally outside..rather than inward, which perhaps has been our nemesis in the last 20 years or so.

Re: India lose the Azlan final

Not bad!! Hats off to Bansal and Pargat for bringing the best out of an inexperienced team. It shows what a motivating coach and effective management can do to the morale of the team. The boys played their heart out and made me believe in Indian Hockey again. Sandeep singh is undoubtedly one of the best drag flicker in the world. He is a match winner. I wonder why he was kept out of the team for so long. Howmany times this guy has to prove himself? Good show by Adrian as goal keeper, Diwakar Ram, midfielders led by Sardara Singh, and forwards, specially Shivendra Singh. What if we add Khandekar, Rajpal, and Prabhjot to the team? How about Deepak Thakur and Gagan Ajit? Possibilities????

Re: India lose the Azlan final

It's a great achievement considering the disaster happened in this sport. It's great that we showed an excellent skills while taking penalty corner's which had been the peak of the problem for the last ten years or so. BUT OUR FIELD HOCKEY IS NOT UP TO MARK WHEN THERE WILL BE BATTLE AGAINST TOP TEAM'S LIKE GERMANY, HOLLAND AUSTRALIA, SPAIN. So good job Bansal/Ric and work on field hockey skills which can be achieved by improving each individual players dribling skills. You listening Mr. Coach and Expert Coach...

Re: India lose the Azlan final

Dilbeer just names all the sikh players on the team lol. btw you missed out ranjit singh he had a cracker in the final.

it was a great final they didnt let the mental problem of losing 5-1 on day 1 affect their perfromance and fought after the death when you think about it in a technical way

Re: India lose the Azlan final

Congrats Team India !!!!

It was a good show by the Indians on the ground. As i said in my earlier comments that the new blood will bring the body back to life and we can see...it has worked and the body has responded well. Atlast Indian hockey came to life from coma. All praises to the new command in adhoc committiee. So what if we lost..not to loose heart. We were near the title...almost. Even the old regime is stunned by the performance of the team and sandeep singh. They have already buried hockey in their regime and are now shocked at the rebirth of the hockey . I am sure Mr. aslam sher Khan, Dhanraj pillay, Mohd. Shahid, Ashok kumar, Zafer Iqbal, Pragat singh, ajitpal singh these all olden goldies will raise this game to a new hights. After a long time we can see the adimin in th ehand sof the players who know the game and the tactics how to raise the game. I remember some words from a poet" Kon kehta hey ki aasmaan mein sooraakh naheen ho sakata, ek pathther to tabiyat se uchalo yaaron" . (who says u can't penetrate thru sky, but throw a stone with a strong will friend) I am not sure if I translated it correctly, but I hope the meanign is quite clear to all. Anyways....again my best wishes to the new command and the new soldiers of Indian Hockey.....

Re: India lose the Azlan final

It is so happy to see our team in the final at Ipoh after two initial defeats. We gave a good fight to the deserving Argentinians.
Credit goes to the adhoc committee running the federation and Sports Minister. After the back to back defeats and bottom finishing in the two four nation tournaments in Australia, the podium finish at Ipoh is heartening. Sandeep Singh the drag flicker par excellence, made all the difference. We, the hockey enthusiasts in the country, believe that all in the team including officials contributed their share in the good show. Keep it up.

good play but india should continue to show this form in future. I think if we can convert more of the chances that come our way we can beat any team in the world. selectiion should be fare and only deserving players should be in the team. coach A k bansal should be given more time and independence so that he can built up a good team. Hope this team can bring back our glourious past.

Re: India lose the Azlan final

India has won silver medal... Thats good enough..... It is a step further to start planning and putting things in right place. Please do not bring the old war horses. Gagan, Deepak, Prabhjoth all are just mere waste. Gagan was good in circle when Dhanraj and Baljit Dhillon were in team - as they used to dodge players and pass to him for scoring. When they went, Gagan was a big zero. More over Gagan is the least fittest player in the team. Cannot run or tackle or retackle. He stays above 25 yards waiting for people to play the ball to him. Moreover he is a bad element in creating maximum drift among players. So such players need not be taken into team again. The coach has started with a young bunch of players. If things goes well 4 years are good enough for truly planning and focussing on for at least next Olympics. Hence do not mix and put the old wine in the new bottle. Let us face reality than experiment with old stocks of players who would be around 32 years of age by next Olympics season (in calculation that they were 21 when they won junior world cup in 2001).

Re: India lose the Azlan final

Who is this Dilbeer yaar. Takes names of only Punjabis..... For your information Gurwinder chandi was not even on the 16 list for the finals yaar. He was sitting outside in gallery. Give credit to all players. Do not single them.... If Adrian was not in goal then perhaps India would have never come to the final. Sandip did well in PCs. But was very slow in defense. Luckily Diwakar, Vickramkant did manage the defense ofcourse with Ranjit singh well. Gurbaj was good in his attack, but messed up many a times while dodging. Sunil and shivender played exceptionally well. Mandeep, Sarwanjit in patches with Cheeyana who has to come up to a level of expectations. But others like Birender lakhra, the other full back ??? needs to improve a lot. Dilbeer dont cateogorize India as Punjabi team. Represent India as India. This kind of classification has killed many skilled players in the past from hockey. If thats the case India can only dream of achieving a olympic medal.

Re: India lose the Azlan final

As an Indian it was a moment of great pride and honour to see this young team finish runners-up at the Azlan Shah Hockey Tournament. They played with a great degree of motivation(which was missing lately in our hockey team) which made up for lack of skill in some aspects of the game vis a vis the teams from Australia,Holland,Spain etc.
However I am sure that under the able guidance of Ric Charlesworth and cream of Indian hockey greats(Pargat Singh,Dhanraj Pillay,Mohammed Shahid,Ashok Kumar,Ajitpal Singh,Aslam Sher Khan)we will strive to create a formidable striking force which can withstand onslaughts from the best hockey teams of the world and combine as a winning formation.
MITTAL CHAMPIONS TRUST floated by MR.LAKSHMI MITTAL is keen on development of sports in INDIA and are open to a concrete and long term development programme for hockey so as to sponsor the game.

Re: India lose the Azlan final

Noted from press statements on arrival at Delhi airport. We keep hearing statements like "we had nothing to loose". It is really a stupid statement when you think of it deeply. If we go to a playing ground thinking that we have nothing to loose - then we never end up as champions. Mind you Pargat we lost the trophy. Is that - nothing to loose strategy??. If we go out with this negative attitude we are half lost in the game. But if we really set our target as the trophy then we have everything to gain, a target we have set, a determination is pierced into the mindset of players. That makes the players to realize the responsibility, the indebtedness to play for the nation, the courage to fight for. Nothing to loose attitude makes you casual in your approach.. So Pargat, you targeted the players only to 'nothing to losse' as such you were not sure of winning. Your motivation is null for the boys. Better change your attitude as you seem to be de-motivating element.

Is the penalty corner only way to score a goal? And if yes, then drag flick is the only way to score a goal in penalty corner? What if Sandeep Singh cannot convert a Penalty Corner to a goal? Indian Hockey needs a lot of improvement.

Dilbeer I have said about what you have written. You have mentioned only punjabis name. Have u mentioned any one else? Dont be stupid yaar. The language is clear. I think u understand english and u also understand what the message is? I have said u should also take the names of other Indians who represent the team India. There for be a hockey fan for Indian team and not merely Punjabi players. I hope u understand this message. if not u start a website for punjabi hockey players only.
In the past we saw few punjabi players writing to one of the press persons, praising about themselves and asked them to write in press. I hope you are not the same guy?????
